Chinese Astrology - The Art of the Chinese Zodiacs

By Jamie Hanson and Isabelle Lucas

People consider Chinese astrology as an art. The idea of Chinese astrology is to assist people obtain their objectives via self awareness and continuous advances of the mind and soul. Like western astrology, the Chinese astrology system is used to determine a person's health, career direction, likes and dislikes, compatibility with other person, luck attraction and a lot more.

Chinese astrology is composed of a 12 year cycle which has 12 animals to represent every year, they are better termed as the Chinese Zodiacs. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (or goat), monkey, rooster, dog, and pig, arranged always in this order. The perfect genesis of the twelve animal systems is still not known. But there is a tale behind its origination, that is the Jade King wasn't doing anything and was feeling bored. He didn't know what was happening on Earth, because he had servants satisfying his each wish. He decided that he wanted to see the animals that live the earth so he sent word to his advisers to bring him twelve animals. The adviser initially sent an request to the Rat, asking him to also get the cat, as the Rat was envious he avoided the cat from knowing the news.

Later on, invitations were sent to animals like, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Ram, the Monkey, the Rooster and the Dog and were asked to attend the next days. They queued in front of the king, and later on he discovered that they summed only eleven, than 12 that he wanted. The Jade king sent his servant down to Earth to get the twelfth animal. The servant ran into a man carrying a Pig, and snatched| it and sent it to the king.

The animals stood in front of the king in no particular order. The Rat, being smaller than the remaining, jumped on the Ox's back and started to play the flute. This impressed the king greatly and he was happy. He gave the Rat first place. The second stood the Ox for his true sportsmanship quality and the third stood the Tiger as he was quite strong. The forth place was for the Rabbit, the Dragon took the fifth position, The sixth place was fro Snake, the seventh for the Horse, the eighth one for the Ram, Monkey stood ninth, tenth was Rooster and eleventh was the Dog. By default, and due to the king's just nature, twelfth place went to the Pig. After the ceremony concluded, the cat asked the king to reassess but he did not agree with the cat.

There are 5 elements in the Chinese astrology. These elements were Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, always being given in that order as it is said to be a continuous course, that is Wood generates Fire; Fire generates Earth; Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood, and again it goes back to its start.

Last but not least there is the cosmic and divine strength that influences the entire Chinese astrology system. This force is termed as The Yin and The Yang. The Yin symbolizes the female and the Yang symbolizes the male. An diverse explanation states that the Ying stands for the Evil and the Yang stands for the Good. When properly joint the Ying and Yang produce collective harmony and perpetual balance. The combination of Yin and Yang is the veiled power in the wake of the Chinese Horoscope system.
But the Chinese Astrologers are not stern decision makers. They don't believe a person's fortune is already given accurately at the moment he/she was born. What they do believe is that a person's time and place of birth set limits within which a person has freedom. What happens within these boundaries is influenced not only by own decision also by outer issues such as locality, financial situation and the like.
